Thanks to unusually warm and dry weather, the construction of the new Chick-fil-A at the Lenoir Crossing shopping center in Lenoir is moving along in rapid fashion.

Donny Jenkins, a project manager for Duluth, Ga.-based W.H. Bass, Inc., said the planned restaurant has featured a steady two dozen workers at all times since construction began two months ago.

“The weather has been great,” Jenkins said. “We’re definitely ahead of schedule.”

With the exterior portion of the building nearly finished, work has turned toward the interior, along with setting up for outside paving. Jenkins said Lenoir’s Chick-fil-A is one of 14 currently under construction.

The interior portion is beginning to take shape, including the service counter, food preparation area, freezer, cooler, and closed-in children’s play area.

Jenkins said he hopes to begin paving prior to Thanksgiving, with kitchen equipment scheduled to arrive in early December, and store furniture coming along just before Christmas.

The rapid progress has not altered the planned opening of the restaurant, however. Jenkins said Feb. 2 continues to be the scheduled opening date. He added that the company has plans to install a prospective employee hiring trailer in early to mid December.

“We do a good bit of these,” Jenkins said, noting that this Chick-fil-A is the 28th he has been a part of. Along with Chick-fil-A’s, Jenkins said W.H. Bass also builds Love’s convenience stores and truck stops, Bojangles’, and Discount Tire stores.

Jenkins said he has been pleased with the support from the community, including local officials who conducted an inspection on a holiday.

“The community has been great,” he said.

Caldwell County’s largest private employee is expanding again.

Merchants Distributors, Inc., a wholesale grocery distributor, is investing $5 million to add 50,000 square feet to its distribution center, which is in the Caldwell County portion of Hickory just south of the Granite Falls Wal-Mart.

According to Caldwell County Economic Development Commission Executive Director Deborah Murray, the expansion is expected to be completed in early 2017. She discussed the expansion plans at a meeting with the Caldwell EDC Board of Directors.

MDI has more than 2,200 employees at the distribution center. The company ships products to approximately 600 stores, primarily in the Southeast.

In 2014, MDI began a $20 million project to add more than 116,000 square feet to the distribution center’s freezer facility.

Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corp. is building a solar garden on a portion of the Patterson School site. According to Alan Merck, Blue Ridge’s director of key accounts and business development, the project should be finished by Thanksgiving.

Merck said more than 300 Blue Ridge customers already have signed up to get a portion of their energy from one or more of the 392 electricity-generating solar panels that will be installed. The solar site is one of four that Blue Ridge plans to have in its coverage area.
